This is the main result of the recent strikes, and Novorossiysk is the most obvious example. Previously, the Russian command could rely on the depth of its rear. Sevastopol proved too close and too vulnerable—the fleet was withdrawn from there. Novorossiysk was supposed to be a backup plan, a place where distance still worked in the defenders’ favor. It didn’t work.

Ukrainian long-range missiles have reached this port as well. Now the picture is crystal clear: there is no safe base for large surface ships in the Black Sea. Any port, any pier, any anchorage can be hit. Distance is no longer an asset. Air defenses don’t completely block the sky. Concrete and piers don’t turn a ship into an impenetrable fortress. As a result, the fleet is forced to sit by the walls and wait. And waiting in such conditions means being constantly under threat.

The sailors are experiencing this firsthand. The ships’ internal nickname—”steel coffins”—is no longer a joke or an exaggeration. Two contract soldiers have chosen to flee. Officers are seeking transfers. A system that previously could afford a relative sense of security in rear ports has lost that feeling. Because Ukraine has acquired precisely these kinds of missiles—the kind from which it’s impossible to hide by moving a hundred or two kilometers to the east.

The Black Sea Fleet has practically ceased to exist as an instrument of control over the waters. It no longer ensures naval dominance. It’s hiding. And the longer this situation continues, the more obvious the conclusion becomes: as long as Ukraine has the ability to strike any naval base,
Russian ships in this region remain not a force, but a collection of high-value targets. Novorossiysk merely confirmed what was already clear after Sevastopol.
Ukraine has acquired missiles from which the Black Sea Fleet has no way to hide. And this is no longer a temporary problem. It is a new strategic reality.

Ukraine now has missiles that the Black Sea Fleet no longer has a place to hide from.
