{"id":36674,"date":"2026-09-22T14:04:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T14:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsreporters.org\/?p=36674"},"modified":"2026-09-22T14:04:33","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T14:04:33","slug":"ecb-calls-for-tougher-eu-crypto-rules-and-wider-ban-on-stablecoin-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsreporters.org\/?p=36674","title":{"rendered":"ECB calls for tougher EU crypto rules and wider ban on stablecoin interest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe&#8217;s central banks want the EU&#8217;s crypto rules tightened, calling for a wider ban on interest payments on stablecoins, new powers to curb tokens pegged to foreign currencies such as the US dollar, and EU-level supervision of crypto firms.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A day after unveiling Pontes, its system for settling tokenised assets in central bank money, the ECB has set out how it wants Europe&#8217;s crypto rulebook rewritten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The response, published on Tuesday by the European System of Central Banks, which groups the ECB with the EU&#8217;s national central banks, argues for tougher rules on stablecoins, staking and crypto firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It feeds into the European Commission&#8217;s review of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA, the EU&#8217;s rulebook for cryptocurrencies and the firms that trade them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MiCA has applied since December 2024, and the last transitional deadline for existing operators expired on 1 July, including Binance, the world&#8217;s largest exchange, to stop serving European customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission&#8217;s consultation will close on 30 September, a month later than planned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe&#8217;s central banks want the EU&#8217;s crypto rules tightened, calling for a wider ban on interest payments on stablecoins, new powers to curb tokens pegged to foreign currencies such as the US dollar, and EU-level supervision of crypto firms.
