On Monday, August 10, drones attacked Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan, one of the region’s key industrial centers, home to major oil-refining and petrochemical facilities.

According to monitoring channels, residents of Nizhnekamsk and Chistopol reported numerous drones flying over the cities. Photos and videos posted online also showed UAVs in the sky and columns of smoke.

Later, the authorities of Tatarstan confirmed the attack. They said the region had come under a large-scale drone assault in the morning, targeting both industrial and civilian facilities in Nizhnekamsk. Russian authorities also reported fatalities as a result of the attack.

Nizhnekamsk is one of Russia’s largest oil-refining and petrochemical hubs. Major facilities located there include TANECO, TAIF-NK, and petrochemical assets operated by SIBUR.

TANECO, part of the Tatneft group, is one of Russia’s largest and most modern oil refineries, specializing in deep crude oil processing and the production of petroleum products.

TAIF-NK focuses on crude oil and gas condensate processing, while Nizhnekamskneftekhim, part of SIBUR, is one of Europe’s largest petrochemical plants, producing synthetic rubber, base polymers and other high-tech materials.

The attack therefore targeted a major component of Russia’s fuel, energy and petrochemical infrastructure.
