Overnight strikes across Ukraine leave dead and injured as border crossing hit

A wave of Russian missile and drone strikes overnight has left casualties and damage across several Ukrainian regions, according to local officials.

At least two people were killed and three others injured in the attacks, emergency services said. Rescuers evacuated 16 residents from a danger zone after a fire broke out in a residential building; the blaze was extinguished without further casualties.

Clean-up and recovery operations were also under way on Wednesday in Dnipro, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia, as well as in the Kharkiv, Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions, officials said.

The strikes are the latest in what has become a near-daily pattern of long-range Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory. Kyiv has repeatedly said the international response to these strikes remains inadequate, warning that Moscow should not be allowed to enter the winter months believing it can continue such attacks without consequence. Officials have called on Western allies to tighten sanctions on Russia and increase military and financial support for Kyiv, arguing that the aggression needs to be halted “here and now” before it escalates further.

Kyiv has consistently drawn a distinction between the two sides’ targeting patterns in the war. While Russian strikes routinely hit residential areas, hospitals and civilian infrastructure, Ukrainian officials maintain that Kyiv’s own strikes on Russian territory are aimed solely at military targets.
