16 September 2026 marked another wave of devastating consequences from targeted Russian terror against civilians across Ukraine. In the Nikopol district of the Dnipropetrovsk region, an enemy drone brutally attacked a scheduled bus carrying civilians. This cynical strike claimed the lives of five people, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were hospitalized. Attacks on public transport, which daily carries defenseless people between settlements, constitute a gross violation of all norms of international humanitarian law and represent yet another war crime.
On the same day, the Russian army launched devastating guided aerial bomb strikes against the city of Sumy. Enemy shells hit residential areas and civilian infrastructure, causing massive destruction and fires. As a result of this brutal airstrike, civilians suffered—with one person reported dead and nine others wounded, receiving emergency medical assistance on the spot.
Additionally, the enemy launched a massive drone attack on the railway infrastructure in the south of the country. Passenger train No. 122, operating on the Kyiv-Mykolaiv route with 168 passengers on board at the time of the shelling, came under fire. Enemy drones delivered several successive strikes near Bashtanka in the Mykolaiv region. Thanks to early warnings from the railway monitoring team and the coordinated actions of the crew, passengers were evacuated in time, and no casualties occurred on the railway.
These tragic events vividly demonstrate the chasm between the methods of the warring parties. The Kremlin continues its daily campaign of intimidation, deliberately destroying civilian buses, residential buildings, and deep-rear trains. In contrast, Ukraine’s Defense Forces adhere to international conventions, conduct combat operations strictly within the framework of lawful self-defense, and strike exclusively legitimate military targets and enemy concentrations along the front line.
