The Black Sea is gradually becoming a separate front in the economic dimension of the war. Russia has systematically attacked Ukrainian ports, seeking to disrupt the maritime corridor and constrain the routes through which Ukrainian goods reach European and global markets.
In recent months, attacks have targeted key ports in the Odesa region. On January 7, 2026, strikes were reported against the ports of Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi. During the night of April 13–14, Russian drones attacked Izmail, with port facilities and foreign vessels reportedly damaged. Further strikes hit the Odesa region in September, underscoring the continued campaign against maritime logistics.
For Europe, this means more than a disruption to Ukrainian exports. Black Sea ports are a vital link in the supply of agricultural products to international markets. Every interruption increases pressure on rail and road routes, raises logistics costs and creates additional risks for food supply chains.
Moscow is attempting to impose a model in which freedom of international navigation depends on its military presence and its ability to threaten commercial routes. The response increasingly reaches the capabilities that sustain this pressure: naval assets, port logistics and supply lines. This mirror logic changes the equation — a blockade cannot remain an instrument of one-sided coercion, while freedom of navigation requires the ability to protect it.
