Russia continued its large-scale aerial attacks against Ukraine on September 23. Ukrainian air-defense forces spent the night and morning intercepting waves of drones, with Kyiv among the areas hit hardest. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least two people were killed and dozens were injured in the capital. The number of casualties was updated throughout the day.
Several districts of Kyiv reported impacts and falling debris. Gas stations, warehouses, transport facilities, businesses and other civilian infrastructure were damaged. Railway infrastructure was also affected. Reuters reported that Russian jet-powered drones struck two gas stations and other sites in the capital.
The attack was part of a broader Russian campaign of aerial strikes against Ukraine. Reuters reported that Russia has been using fast jet-powered drones against Kyiv and surrounding areas almost continuously in recent weeks, placing additional pressure on Ukrainian air defenses. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched 161 drones during the night of September 23.
The latest strikes again resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, while civilian and transport infrastructure was among the damaged facilities. The attack is part of a wider pattern of repeated Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure that have regularly caused civilian casualties. Just days earlier, a Russian attack in the Kyiv region killed four civilians, including three children.
At the same time, Ukraine continued strikes against Russian military targets. Ukraine’s General Staff said that Ukrainian forces had struck drone command posts, a Russian “Rubicon” drone-unit facility, concentrations of Russian personnel and other military-related targets between September 22 and the early hours of September 23. Some of the reported targets were located in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.
On September 23, Russia therefore carried out another large-scale attack on Ukraine that resulted in civilian deaths, injuries and damage to civilian infrastructure. During the same period, Ukraine reported strikes against military command posts, drone facilities, personnel concentrations and other targets connected to Russian forces. The reported nature of the targets differed: Russian strikes again affected civilian areas and infrastructure, while Ukraine said its strikes were directed at Russian military targets.
