Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party, the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania,” and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union signed a new coalition agreement on June 18 after the far-right, anti-Ukrainian Dawn of Nemunas party was removed from the ruling alliance.
The new coalition will control 75 of the 141 seats in the Seimas. Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius is expected to become prime minister, replacing Inga Ruginienė, who served in the position for less than a year. The composition of the new Cabinet has not yet been announced.
Under the agreement, the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania” will oversee the energy, health, and agriculture ministries, while the Farmers and Greens Union will retain responsibility for the economy, innovation, and justice portfolios. The remaining ministries will be led by the Social Democrats.
Coalition partners pledged to pursue socially oriented, fiscally responsible, and investment-friendly policies while maintaining government stability. They also committed to strengthening Lithuania’s defense capabilities, civil protection, cybersecurity, and the country’s overall security resilience.
