During the night of July 13, a drone crashed and exploded near the village of Copanca in Moldova’s Căușeni district. According to preliminary information, the aircraft was a Russian Geran-2 (Shahed-136) drone that entered Moldovan airspace during Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region.
The incident was confirmed by Moldova’s Ministry of Defense.
Details
The ministry said the aerial object was detected at 1:03 a.m. Preliminary findings indicate that the Geran-2 drone crossed Moldovan airspace as Russian forces carried out strikes against Ukraine’s Odesa region.
Emergency and technical specialists were dispatched to the crash site to investigate the explosion and examine the drone’s remains.
The Defense Ministry urged residents not to approach, touch, or move any suspicious drones or debris, warning that such objects may contain explosive components that are sensitive to radio signals.
Background
This is not the first such incident. On June 8, debris from a drone was also discovered in Moldova following another Russian aerial attack on Ukraine.
Earlier, in March, Moldovan border guards found another unmanned aerial vehicle near the country’s border with Ukraine after it crashed in the southern part of Moldova.
