A pair of Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft that, according to Warsaw, was attempting to approach Polish airspace.

The incident was confirmed on July 14 by Poland’s Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, as reported by RMF24.

According to the minister, the interception took place shortly after noon over the Baltic Sea, about 30 kilometers off the coast near Ustka. Poland scrambled two fighter jets on alert duty to intercept the Russian aircraft.

“Our fighter jets on standby intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft that was attempting to enter Polish airspace. This incident once again demonstrates that Russia poses a direct threat,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

Background

Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned of possible Russian provocations, saying Warsaw has credible intelligence indicating that Moscow is preparing new provocative actions against Poland. At the same time, he noted that Russia currently lacks the capability to launch a direct military attack on the country.
