U.S. Inflation Tops 4% for the First Time in Three Years as Rising Oil Prices Fuel Price Pressures

U.S. annual inflation climbed to 4.2% in May, its highest level in three years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Consumer prices increased 0.5% month over month, largely driven by higher energy costs, with gasoline accounting for about 60% of the monthly increase.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, remained more moderate, rising 0.2% in May and bringing the annual core rate to 2.9%. Economists said the latest figures suggest inflationary pressures remain concentrated in the energy sector rather than spreading across the broader economy.

The report is the first inflation reading since Kevin Warsh became Chair of the Federal Reserve. With inflation accelerating and the labor market remaining resilient, analysts expect the Fed to keep interest rates unchanged or consider further tightening monetary policy.

President Donald Trump dismissed concerns over the data, expressing confidence that inflation will ease if oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz resume. While economists believe inflation is unlikely to return to the record highs seen in 2022, they warn that price growth could remain elevated well into next year.
