Following talks between Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, Ukraine believes it has secured U.S. backing for increasing pressure on Russia to bring about meaningful peace negotiations, according to Kyiv Independent, citing a senior Ukrainian official.
The source said Trump privately encouraged Zelensky to act “more boldly,” adding that the U.S. president does not believe Vladimir Putin will engage in genuine negotiations without significant pressure. At the same time, U.S. officials emphasize that Trump remains committed to the principle of “peace through strength.”
The remarks come as Kyiv continues to push for a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin. Trump has expressed support for such talks, while the Kremlin has continued to reject the proposal.
