Russian Security Officials Urge Putin to Cancel State Duma Elections

Russia’s leadership is reportedly discussing the possibility of postponing State Duma elections amid mounting economic challenges, declining support for the ruling United Russia party, and an increase in drone attacks. According to Meduza, citing two sources close to the Kremlin, the proposal is being promoted by senior FSB officials and National Guard chief Viktor Zolotov.

The discussions reportedly began in the spring of 2026, as Russia faced growing budget pressures, rising inflation, and layoffs across various industries. Supporters of the idea argue that holding elections under such conditions could weaken the government’s political standing.

However, the sources stress that the proposal remains at the discussion stage, with no formal documents submitted to President Vladimir Putin. The debate reportedly intensified following recent Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Moscow.

The initiative is opposed by Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev and the Kremlin’s political bloc led by Sergei Kiriyenko. According to the sources, Putin himself still favors holding the elections, viewing them as an important political signal. One possible legal mechanism for postponement would be declaring martial law or a state of emergency in certain regions, although the official plan remains to hold the vote on September 18–20.
