Kazakhstan halves oil production amid drone attacks on Novorossiysk

Kazakhstan has cut its daily oil production by more than half after operations at the country’s main export terminal in Russia’s Novorossiysk were suspended due to drone attacks. This was reported by Reuters, citing an industry source.

According to the agency, oil and gas condensate production fell on Sunday from the June average of 2.16 million barrels per day to around 1 million barrels per day, or 133,200 tonnes.

Last week, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy said the production decline was caused by export restrictions and the temporary shutdown of the terminal for security reasons. More than 80% of Kazakhstan’s oil exports pass through the Novorossiysk terminal, including shipments from major international energy companies.

Analysts say the sharp drop in production could further tighten the global oil market, which is already facing risks to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and other key energy export routes.

The situation has also highlighted Kazakhstan’s heavy reliance on Russian infrastructure for its oil exports.

Earlier, Russia officially warned shipowners about increased navigation risks in its Black Sea waters due to intensified Ukrainian drone attacks.

Previously, media reports said that Washington had urged Ukraine to avoid attacking vessels in the Black Sea that were not linked to Russia. According to those reports, Donald Trump’s administration was concerned about the potential impact on U.S. energy interests, including Chevron’s operations in Kazakhstan.
