Two Russian oil refineries — the Moscow Oil Refinery and the Taneco refinery in the Republic of Tatarstan — have suspended operations following drone attacks, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters.

According to the sources, the strike targeted Gazprom Neft’s refinery located in southeastern Moscow. The attack damaged the plant’s main crude distillation unit, which accounts for approximately 53% of the refinery’s processing capacity.
Later, local emergency services claimed that the fire had been extinguished and that it had not affected the refinery’s operations. However, this information contradicts the accounts provided by Reuters’ sources.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that one facility on the refinery’s premises had been damaged but did not disclose further details.
Meanwhile, the Taneco refinery in Nizhnekamsk, owned by Tatneft, reportedly halted crude oil processing entirely on June 12.
According to the sources, drone strikes and the subsequent fires forced both primary crude distillation units out of service: the AVT-6 unit, with a capacity of about 20,000 tonnes per day (around 45% of the refinery’s capacity), and the AVT-7 unit, capable of processing approximately 23,000 tonnes per day.

Moscow came under a drone attack on the morning of June 16. A fire broke out at the city’s largest oil refinery, located in the Kapotnya district.
The Moscow Oil Refinery (Gazprom Neft Moscow Refinery JSC) is one of Russia’s largest and oldest refining facilities, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 11 million tonnes of crude oil.
The refinery plays a critical role in supplying fuel to Moscow, providing around 40% of the city’s gasoline and 50% of its diesel fuel, while also serving as the primary supplier of jet fuel to Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo airports. According to estimates, one in every three vehicles in Moscow runs on fuel produced by the refinery, which is also among the city’s largest taxpayers.
Between 2024 and 2026, the refinery was repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks. The most significant incidents occurred in September 2024 and May 2026, temporarily disrupting operations while damage was repaired.
Taneco is one of Russia’s most technologically advanced oil refining complexes, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 16.2 million tonnes of crude oil. The refinery is known for its high refining depth and its large output of high-value light petroleum products.
