Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that U.S. President Donald Trump had indicated he would return to a tougher sanctions policy against Russia. Zelenskyy made the remarks during a joint press conference with Honduran President Nasry Asfura.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine also received positive signals from both the G7 and President Trump regarding additional support for the country’s air defense. He added that, for the first time, the United States had responded positively to the idea of licensing the production of Ukrainian missiles.
“Licenses for the production of our missiles have, for the first time, been received positively by the American side. I have been raising this issue since the Biden administration, but we never received any response,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that consultations will be held in the near future and expressed hope that Ukraine will ultimately receive the required production licenses.
Zelenskyy also said Trump had promised to revisit sanctions against Russia and assured Kyiv that U.S. assistance would continue.
“We will receive much greater support. Those are President Trump’s words. The goal is for Putin to understand that assistance will not stop and that it is therefore in his interest to end the war. We will see how this works in practice,” Zelenskyy said.
Earlier, it emerged that the United States had allowed the sanctions waiver for seaborne Russian oil to expire. Washington has not yet announced whether it will fully restore the sanctions regime. According to Reuters, the Trump administration had temporarily eased restrictions during the conflict with Iran to help stabilize global energy markets, but that policy could change following the U.S.-Iran memorandum aimed at ending the conflict.
