Gasoline shortages and rising fuel prices are spreading across more Russian regions, while the Kremlin is attempting to downplay the scale of the fuel crisis and reassure the public. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
According to the analysts, Russian authorities are trying to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices following Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure. At the same time, independent Russian media report gasoline shortages and price increases in St. Petersburg, the Voronezh and Tula regions, as well as growing public dissatisfaction. Some independent gas station chains have already raised prices to offset potential losses.
Regional authorities have also been forced to respond. Officials in the Saratov region are considering introducing fuel price caps, while the Tver region has temporarily restricted gasoline sales at Surgutneftegas and Tatneft filling stations. Authorities in the Tula region also confirmed supply disruptions caused by logistical difficulties and increased demand.
ISW believes it will become increasingly difficult for the Russian government to stabilize the fuel market. Further strikes on Russia’s oil refining and energy infrastructure could deepen gasoline shortages and accelerate fuel price increases across the country.
