North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a rapid expansion of the country’s nuclear capabilities, arguing that recent developments in the Middle East prove nuclear deterrence is the only reliable way to guarantee national security. He made the remarks during a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party Politburo.
Kim accused the United States of fueling global instability and criticized Japan for what he described as efforts to strengthen its military power. He also unveiled new defense plans, including the construction of a 10,000-ton strategic missile cruiser and additional naval bases.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), North Korea possesses around 60 nuclear warheads and enough fissile material to produce at least 30 more. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has warned that Pyongyang could expand its arsenal by up to 20 nuclear weapons annually.
Kim’s statements come as the United States and Iran continue negotiations on a long-term peace agreement. Despite multiple meetings between Donald Trump and Kim during Trump’s first presidency, North Korea has continued to pursue its nuclear program and further strengthen its military capabilities.
